Program Notes: | Fragment of Nightfall was written on 7 July 1988 for bassoonist Edwin Alexander and composer D.C.Husband who had just given the premiere of my songs Akron in Winter with their group Fiati Chamber Players. In what turned out to be my last summer as a New Yorker before returning to Ohio, I was staying with a friend (the pianist Bennett Lerner) in Long Island City while trying to plan a future. This quiet and lyrical piece reflects a cool (perhaps also rather dark) oasis in the midst of a hot summer during which both my life and musical styles changes quite a lot. The first public performance was given by Anne Gillis, bassoon, and Robert Frankenberry, piano on 21 April 1995 during a New Music Group /Daedalus concert in Akron, Ohio. |
