An Evening Streaked with Absence
Date Completed:March 15, 1994
Duration:about 5 minutes
Instrumentation:trumpet (in C) and piano
Comments:for Joel Treybig
Program Notes:"The sound of the trumpet in slow, lyrical music has always reminded me of cool, misty nights spent walking the streets of Manhattan. I've "transcribed" these melodies from memories and dreams, which may account for the rather vague form of the work. The opening piano flourish is a sort of door chime rung by Memory; what follows - that absence which streaks the glass - is a perpetual coming out of the fog and rain into the warmth of Cary's Bar and Grill, on West 72nd Street, where the pianist Murray Grand segues from one incomplete tune to the next, and my friend Cary has waited all these years to have dinner with me again.
