Program Notes: | Quiet English was composed between February 13 and March 4, 1987 for a very soft-spoken Englishman named Simon Anderson I met at a musical evening at Richard Sennett's house in Greenwich Village. I caught him trying out the piano with a few very ethereal bars of Schumann. He broke off and turned to me with a beautiful - but apologetic - smile and said: "I'm afraid I don't really much care for contemporary music." So I wrote this piece and sent it to him on his return to London. RZ |
