Program Notes:Gentle Haunting was written in the late summer of 1987 for a Halloween/fund-raising concert of Oval Window, a new music group some friends and I founded in New York City in the fall of 1986. The rather distant past in evoked by the inclusion of L'homme armé, a song first heard during the Crusades and a compositional basis for many works especially in the Renaissance. As I recall, one of our projects was to commission a series of works from composers across four generations, and this was one of the first to actually be written. The work was first performed by Nancy Ives, solo cello, Charla Abraham, alto flute, Carla Wasson, bass clarinet and Christopher Vassiliades, piano with me as time-keeper at Turtle Bay School, New York City on October 31, 1987.
