Program Notes: | Musicians turn instruments into living things when they touch them. Sylvia Smith's request for a new piece for the Noble Snare inspired me to think about relationships: between thought and action, text and interpretation, and also how the pasage of time changes understanding. This work reflects my admiration for Sylvia Smith - musician/publisher, for Jeff Gram - who helped me generate and refine my ideas, for Matt Dudack - who premieres it tonight, and all the care and imagination they bring to some of the ways a snare drum can be touched. rz august 28 2017 |
