| Program Notes: | View of the harbor was written for - and commissioned by - Katherine (Kater) Reynolds, a kind friend and fellow music performance graduate student "in green college days" at what was then called the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Kater was certainly courageous to trust me! I believe she was the first professional musician to commission me and I determined to write something that was challengingly "modern" yet idiomatically playable. I started it on May 15th (just a week or so after I graduated) in Setauket, Long Island and finished it on July 11th 1980 in my new apartment in New York City. Kater premiered it (with total conviction and consummate artistry) on her graduate recital at Stony Brook in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall on May 12, 1981. |
