Symphony
Date Completed:October 12, 2024
Duration:ca. 14 minutes
Instrumentation:3(3rd=picc)222 4420 strings
Program Notes:This Symphony, originally presented under the authorship of "Brad DeGraw" was composed for the exact instrumentation of the University of Pittsburgh Symphony orchestra in 1993. The manuscript states that it was composed between 9 September and 17 October 1993 in Everett, Ohio.

Cast in three movements (I. fast and lyrical, II. an empty house, III. Epilogue) it is an exploration of Neo-Classicism somewhere between Walter Piston and Igor Stravinsky and was meant to be just challenging enough... Originally written for five trumpets, I have lightly revised the orchestration - keeping the piccolo trumpet and removing the fifth trumpet. The second and third movement materials later found their way into Summer for orchestra.

The first performance of Symphony by the mysterious Brad DeGraw was given by the University of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra under my direction on in Bellefield Hall Auditorium. Roger Zahab
