Program Notes:In 1992 I was asked by theater director James Slowiak to do a fairly outrageous thing - write new incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, which is best known these days for having inspired Edvard Grieg to write wonderful music for the original production. Nonetheless I obliged him by writing a quite a few numbers, including a number of songs. The show went on at the University of Akron’s Sandefur Theater from February 26 to March 8, 1992 with my score for some twelve instruments emanating from loud speakers at key moments.

I then transcribed a few of the songs for viola and piano for Pauline Moleski, a student of mine at the time, to play. Eventually the music was given its first public performance on March 25, 1994 at Mount Union College in Alliance Ohio by Laura Staff, viola and Ellen Fries, piano.
